Fameľija nadevše - a short story collection that reveals the truth about our relationships
The theme of family is central to the book Fameľija nadevše (Family above all), which will be released this November. This short story collection brings together the work of fifteen authors from the Paramisara literary club, who explore themes of family anxieties and hopes in their stories. It is clearly the most significant literary project by Slovo 21 to date in its efforts to popularize Romani literature.
The fifteen short stories in the upcoming book come from the pens of authors who are part of the Paramisara literary club. It was founded by Slovo 21 in 2019 with the goal of supporting original literary work in the Romani language. For emerging authors, the club serves as a space where they can develop their craft and share experiences with established writers. This has helped create the short story collection Fameľija nadevše, which is proof that Romani literature has much to offer the general public.
"The significance for all club members is amazing. We received great support in professional matters. We were able to share our experiences and perspectives on literature with each other. We were able to enrich one another. The result is the book we will be launching this November," says one of the book's editors, Eva Danišová, commenting on the importance of the literary club. Another author, Květa Podhradská, talks about how the club allows her to pass on her writing skills to future generations: "Paramisara is a great benefit to me because what I didn't know in the beginning, I can now pass on to the children I brought into Paramisara, where they can publish." Thanks to this, the book combines stories from both emerging and established authors, creating a diverse literary mosaic that remains thematically cohesive, as the title suggests - Fameľija - family.
In their texts, the fifteen authors explore vulnerability within our closest relationships. They examine the nature of changing established orders and the anxiety we face amidst shifting social moods. The stories speak of unsettling questions, crossing boundaries, and forgiveness. The themes the authors open up address universal experiences that resonate with any reader.
The book launch will take place on International Romani Language Day, November 5th, at KC Vozovna starting at 7:00 PM.
