Discussion, theater, and gypsy jazz: Khamoro is in full swing

May 27, 2024

We haven't even had time to recover from the amazing party with Igor Kmeťo and Vanesa Horáková, and already the second day of Khamoro is upon us. Fans of the side program and gypsy jazz are in for a real treat. You can look forward to an expert discussion on Roma education, a theatrical performance by the Slovak National Theatre, and the first concert at the Jazz Dock in Smíchov.

What motivates young Roma to study, and where do they find support? And how has the Czech education system actually progressed in relation to the Roma since 1989? These questions will be discussed by education experts, scholarship program leaders, and young Roma who are high school and university graduates. The discussion, titled "Educational Opportunities and Examples of Best Practice," will take place from 2:30 PM at Kino Přítomnost and is co-organized by the ROMEA organization, which will present its new campaign created by young Roma students.

Theater at Khamoro is always an amazing and usually joyful experience. This time, however, we won't be laughing as much, as we join the actors of the Slovak National Theatre in revisiting the sad and painful chapters of Roma history. The play "Budete mať luft" reconstructs a tragedy that took place nearly a hundred years ago in the West Slovak village of Pobedim. The vague threat, "Kajo, you're going to have air today!" was a harbinger of an attack on a Roma settlement that resulted in the destruction of homes, injuries, and the deaths of six people, including a child. The performance begins at 6:30 PM at Divadlo X10, and we do not recommend it for the faint of heart.

Monday evening will belong to gypsy jazz. You can look forward to world-class stars – Swing à la Django from Hungary. Their music bridges classical jazz with traditional Roma music, offering a stylish blend of authentic Hungarian music, French chansons, swing, tango, and jazz. They sell out venues all over the world and have collaborated with legends such as Stochelo Rosenberg, Sting, Andrea Bocelli, and Roby Lakatos. Come to the Jazz Dock in Smíchov from 8:00 PM. This is a concert you cannot miss.
