Khamoro is halfway through! Today brings theatre, a film screening, and a concert by the Vltava.

We are halfway through the festival, but the program is showing no signs of slowing down. The fourth day of Khamoro kicks off this afternoon with a Theatre of the Oppressed production, Stories of the Survivors. You can also look forward to a film screening about the Czech education system and the obstacles faced by Romani students. In the evening, we have a concert that blends classical, jazz, and Romani music. You simply cannot miss KLAJAZZROM under the evening sky with a view of the Vltava River and Prague Castle!

THEATRE ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST AND CONTEMPORARY ROMANI ISSUES

Themes of injustice, racism, and historical trauma are at the heart of the theatrical production Stories of the Survivors, which you can catch today at 5:00 PM at Vila Štvanice. Don't expect a traditional play or professional actors. The Theatre of the Oppressed method breaks down all the boundaries of the stage. It invites you directly into the action to search for answers to burning questions alongside others. One of these is the pain passed down from generation to generation – the trauma of the Romani Holocaust. Stories of the Survivors draws on the accounts of descendants of those who survived the horrors of the Nazis. At the same time, the production opens up pressing contemporary issues that Romani people must face.

A FILM ABOUT BARRIERS IN EDUCATION

The Theatre of the Oppressed won't be the only testimony today to the difficulties Romani people face in their daily lives. At 7:00 PM, we will be screening a film at Kino Atlas: Report on the Foundation Year. Director Jakub Fišer’s documentary is, in its own way, a report on how difficult—yet possible—the path to higher education can be for Romani students. It follows the perseverance of individuals as well as the twenty-year effort of the Department of Social Pedagogy at the Faculty of Education of Masaryk University, which decided not to turn a blind eye and instead offer a helping hand. Come to the screening of this documentary about the hidden barriers in the Czech education system, the power of support, and the small steps that can lead to big changes.

A UNIQUE CONCERT BY THE VLTAVA RIVER

The day concludes with the promised KLAJAZZROM—a fusion of classical music with Romani tradition and jazz flair. Starting at 7:00 PM at the Čapadlo Summer Terrace, the local group Galiani Gypsy Jazz looks forward to seeing you. Their music is rooted in classical traditions but grows out of Romani czardas and breathes with the ease of jazz. For them, genres are not boundaries, but rather a space for freedom and improvisation. The band consists of excellent Romani musicians with formal musical training. First violinist Milan Galyáš, who also performs with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, tours all over the world. Clarinetist Miroslav Filko, one of the most respected virtuosos in the Czech Republic, notably contributed to the soundtrack for the film Sherlock Holmes. The concert by the Vltava with a view of Prague Castle will also feature brilliant Romani singers Mária Bikárová and Marta Balážová. Experience energy that resonates long after the final note.
