Thursday at Khamoro: Traditional Romani music concerts begin

Calling all fans of authentic Romani cimbalom music, czardas, dancers, and high-energy performances. On Thursday, May 30, you have the chance to experience the first traditional Romani music concert, starting at 7:00 PM at La Fabrika in Holešovice. What is the magic behind these concerts? You will meet Romani artists from all over the world. Although the Roma live scattered across the globe, they all come together in one hall at Khamoro. That alone promises an incredible experience. Thursday will feature the first half of our traditional bands: the Czech Cimbalom Band of Erik Holub, Latvia’s Ame Roma, and Portugal’s Ciganos D’ouro.

Do you love a lively, upbeat czardas or a melancholic halgató? The Erik Holub Cimbalom Band has everything you would expect from traditional Romani music of the Czech and Slovak Roma in their repertoire. A cimbalom, violins, viola, double bass, and an outstanding singer from a famous musical family – Erika Fečová! Take a trip down memory lane! This cimbalom band will transport you back to the days when the sounds of Romani music filled every other wine bar or restaurant, with singing and playing lasting until dawn!

Do you also love the songs and dances from the legendary film Queen of the Gypsies? Solo vocals accompanied by a seven-string guitar alternating with polyphony, colorful skirts, romances… A group that has been developing traditional Romani music and dance by the Baltic Sea for over 50 years will bring you all of this! Latvia’s Ame Roma will bring authentic Eastern European Romani culture to Prague, a culture that has lost none of its unique color or the true spirit of nomadic Romani life! Get ready for heart-wrenching songs and brilliant dancers who will transport you to a time when people would do anything for true love!

A blend of Spanish flamenco, Portuguese fado, and North African Arabic rhythms—that, in a nutshell, is Portugal’s Ciganos d'Ouro! If anyone is a staple of Khamoro, it is these musicians from the Iberian Peninsula. They have performed at the world’s largest Romani festival several times, always to thunderous applause. Furthermore, the group is celebrating 30 years on the scene at this year’s Khamoro! It was founded in 1994 by brothers José Pato and Sérgio Silva. Initially, they only performed at events for the Portuguese Romani community, but soon, people all over the world began to admire their spirited music!
