The training sessions were a success! Join us as we look back on them.

What are these training sessions about?

Our project Strengthening Intercultural Competencies focuses on organizing training for employees who come into contact with foreigners. Our instructors guide these employees and civil servants through sessions that open up a mutual dialogue on the topics of migration and cultural differences, while also aiming to improve communication skills when interacting with foreigners and to increase mutual tolerance, respect, and understanding.

A few facts to consider

Funded by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the project ran from the beginning of October 2023 to the end of April 2024 and offered a rich series of 7 training sessions, involving a total of 100 participants. The majority were aged 45–59, representing 47% of all attendees. The 30–44 age group was also well represented, making up 36% of participants. Conversely, the least represented groups were those over 60 (11%) and under 30 (6%). More than half of the course participants (63%) were women.

This diverse composition of participants contributed to an inspiring atmosphere and a variety of discussions during the training, making the project highly beneficial for everyone involved.

How did participants rate the courses?

"I learned new information that will help me understand the reasoning behind the actions of foreigners, and it may influence my approach to them at work."

The vast majority of participants (73%) are firmly convinced that they will put the knowledge gained from the courses to practical use. We consider it a great success that even two participants who do not work directly with foreigners stated that they would use the knowledge acquired in their work. This unexpected benefit shows how widely applicable and valuable the information and skills gained during our courses were.

In their feedback, participants noted that the courses helped them gain a different perspective on foreigners and cultural differences, as well as providing new information. Further feedback showed that the instructors led the training in an engaging, dynamic, and positive manner. Participants also gained new information about non-profit organizations, which they rated as very beneficial.

"I work with foreigners, and I learned about new contacts and websites that will serve as sources for further information and current insights."

"Because this is information concerning foreigners, especially important details on where to find things, etc. The information is personally interesting to me and useful for the counseling I regularly provide as part of my job."

What would participants welcome in future similar training sessions?

In their evaluations, some participants mentioned, for example, the need for greater focus and more time dedicated to discussing laws and their practical application, which would be significantly more useful for them. They also emphasized the need to know how to explain to foreigners which state institutions and organizations they can turn to in case of problems, such as exploitation or working without a contract. They also mentioned that they would appreciate more information on the experiences of foreigners regarding legal issues.

"In practice, we need different information; we need more information sharing and data (laws). How to gain the trust of foreigners so they cooperate during inspections. Insights and information related to our work—inspecting illegal employment."

How did our instructors perform?

The instructors rated the course very positively, and the majority of participants expressed equally positive feedback about them. Participants particularly appreciated the instructors' helpfulness, openness, communication skills, attentiveness, and expertise. They also highly valued the instructors' ability to involve participants in discussions and activities. Further positive feedback was received for their professional approach and the use of their own practical experience during the training.

"Both instructors complemented each other; the training was engaging and active."

"Both instructors know what they are doing and are able to convey information in an engaging and interesting way."

Very engaging, entertaining, and witty, with a flawless presentation. Training sessions are often boring, but that certainly cannot be said about this course. Unfortunately, it could use more practical information presented in this same format.

Closing remarks

Overall, the course was rated very positively, and most participants expressed interest in follow-up courses. They highly valued the meeting with the guest from abroad and appreciated the time dedicated to learning about new cultures. They also valued the opportunity to share practical experiences with other participants. On the other hand, they highlighted the need for a greater focus on topics directly related to their professional practice, particularly legislative issues.

The success of the course and the participants' enthusiasm for its continuation reflect an intensive process of discovery that bridges cultures and professional skills, with a clear call for a deeper focus on current professional topics in the period ahead.
