Fameľija nadevše – Slovo 21 publishes a collection of short stories by Romani authors
Supporting Romani literature has long been a priority for the Slovo 21 association. The short story collection Fameľija nadevše (Family Above All) brings together the work of fifteen authors from the Paramisara Romani writers' club, whose stories focus on the universal theme of family—a value that resonates across cultures and is relatable to all readers. The book launch, which proves that Romani literature has much to offer the general public, will take place today at 7:00 PM at KC Vozovna to mark International Romani Language Day.
"Based on conversations with Romani authors, we realized it would be incredibly beneficial to establish a writers' club that would provide ongoing support for their work," says organization director Jelena Silajdžić. Slovo 21 founded the Paramisara Romani PEN club in 2019 with the goal of supporting original literary work by Romani writers. For emerging authors, the club is a place where they can share experiences with established writers and inspire one another. The stories in the Fameľija nadevše collection were created thanks to this unique community, which provides authors with the space to develop and refine their craft.
"The significance for all club members is tremendous. We received great support in professional matters. We were able to share our experiences and perspectives on literature with each other. We were able to enrich one another. The result is the book we are launching this November," comments one of the book's editors, Eva Danišová, on the importance of the literary club.
The short story collection features both emerging and established authors, resulting in a diverse literary mosaic unified primarily by its theme.
As the title suggests, the theme of family struggles and hopes is the central motif of the book. The stories pose unsettling questions, explore vulnerability in our closest relationships, and open up anxieties we face amidst shifting social moods. The themes the authors explore reflect feelings that are surprisingly close to the readers.
For over 25 years, the Slovo 21 association has been committed to integrating Roma into mainstream society through a range of activities, such as tutoring for Romani students and organizing the Khamoro World Romani Festival. Romani literature is a vital component of cultural heritage, and its popularization allows Romani authors to develop and create freely.
"I see huge significance in popularizing Romani literature. We wanted to support a project that would let not only the majority society but also many people from the Romani community know that there are Romani authors who focus on Romani themes," adds Silajdžić regarding the motivations behind the organization's decision to publish the book.
The publication of the Fameľija nadevše collection was supported by Bader Philanthropies, the City of Prague, and the State Culture Fund of the Czech Republic. The book launch event was further supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Prague 3 District.
