Romani People

Avela

We motivate and support Romani children and youth to discover how education can change their lives. Through the Avela project, we provide pupils and students not only with tutoring and mentoring but also with a wide range of extracurricular activities to help them develop their potential and broaden their horizons.

· We are building on the success of the Dža Dureder tutoring project, through which we provided tutoring to over 1,000 Romani pupils and students between 2003 and 2022. As part of this support, 150 Romani students went on to attend universities.

· Avela runs from September 1, 2024, to August 31, 2028, across the entire Czech Republic.

· The first activities will take place in Stříbro, Prague 14, and Bruntál.

Why is it necessary to support Romani children and youth?

Unfortunately, children and young people of Romani origin still face unequal access to education. In practice, this means they deal daily with obstacles such as poverty, discrimination, and a lack of societal support, which prevent them from fully utilizing educational opportunities. This often leads to a decline in their motivation to study, lower school attendance, and poorer academic results. These factors then hinder their further personal and professional development and deepen their social exclusion.

What is our goal?

Education opens doors. We will help Romani pupils and students improve their academic performance and contribute to reducing early school leaving. This will increase their chances of obtaining the qualifications necessary for successful employment and overall integration into society. At the same time, we will develop cooperation with schools and parents, which is essential for the successful education of Romani children and youth.

What activities will we be organizing?

· We will provide tutoring and mentoring in an informal setting, including preparation for entrance exams.

· We will develop communication and intercultural skills of children to make it easier for them to integrate into the education system.

· We will organize meetings for children and youth from different schools, who will motivate each other.

· We will show children how to spend their free time meaningfully.

· We will host discussions with successful Roma role models, who will share their personal journeys to inspire the children.

The AVELA project is co-funded by the European Union.

Together for better education: electronics from People in Need have reached children

Slovo 21 has long supported young people and children on their education journey. Our collaboration with the organization People in Need has given us the opportunity to offer them a helping hand through direct and practical assistance. Today, institutional education is almost impossible without a computer. We have now been able to deliver electronics where they are needed most.

Even though they grow up without a family, they have dreams. Slovo 21 helps Romani children from children's homes

They don't grow up in "typical" families. But that doesn't mean they lack ambition, talent, or the drive to work on themselves. Our Avela project supports Roma children in their education and development across the Czech Republic – and some of its activities are focused on those living in children's homes.
