"Communication is not universal." How the Slovo 21 project supported intercultural competencies in practice
The Slovo 21 project, titled Strengthening Intercultural Competencies, helped civil servants better understand people from different cultural backgrounds and manage the situations they encounter in their work. The project concludes this August. In this interview, Kateřina Kopečná, the project's lead methodologist, discusses the project's progress, her experience as a trainer, and why there is no universal guide to communicating with others.

Those who listened closely may have learned a thing or two about their own desires, worries, and joys. The evening, dedicated to the Romani tradition of vakeriben (storytelling), was hosted by members of the Paramisara Romani writers' club, whose stories touched on the theme of the Romani family. Even the musicians from the Gipsy Brothers, joined by David Kraus, eventually began sharing their own stories, and the evening flew by all too quickly.

This was the name of the second international event of the Sound of Diversity European project, which took place from May 28–30, 2025, as part of the Khamoro festival. Representatives from cities, organizations, and communities gathered to explore ways to promote equality, minority inclusion, and the fight against discrimination through culture.

We are halfway through the festival, but the program is showing no signs of slowing down. The fourth day of Khamoro kicks off this afternoon with a Theatre of the Oppressed production, Stories of the Survivors. You can also look forward to a film screening about the Czech education system and the obstacles faced by Romani students. In the evening, we have a concert that blends classical, jazz, and Romani music.

The situation became complicated for many people who found themselves in uncertainty or danger. The journey of a young man named Gleb to the Czech Republic was a long one. He came into contact with Slovo 21 through the New Home project, which assists holders of international protection.
